CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON

Born in British Columbia, Christopher Anderson spent much of his early years in Texas, where his father was a preacher. In 1999, Anderson made a reportage on Haitian immigrants trying to sail to the United States that would significantly change his work to focus on what he often thought of as experiential journalism. Anderson joined the VII Agency in 2002, and became a Magnum nominee in 2005. He is based in New York.
Magnum Photos is one of the most prestigious photographic agencies in the world. Founded in 1947 by wartime photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, David ‘Chim’ Seymour, and George Rodger, Magnum represents only 60 members worldwide. It is a cooperative organization fully owned and directed by the photographers.

Fred Baldwin is the President and Chairman of FotoFest. He has worked for numerous high profile magazines, including LIFE, National Geographic, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, Time Life Books, Newsweek, and the New York Times, among others. Frederick has documented American civil rights movements extensively, and also poverty in rural America; these projects culminated in numerous high-profile exhibits and a National Fellowship in his honour. Frederick has lectured on documentary photography at the University of Texas, and directed the Photojournalism Program at the University of Houston. Mr. Baldwin’s photos and essays about a day with Pablo Picasso in 1955 were recently published as a book on Zone Zero, entitled Dear Monsieur Picasso.
FotoFest was founded by Frederick Baldwin and Wendy Watriss in 1983. It is an international non-profit photography and education organization based in Houston, Texas.

MaryAnn Camilleri established the Magenta Foundation in 2004, Canada’s pioneering charitable arts publishing house. Magenta works with other individuals and organizations, within the arts community and beyond, to broaden the domestic and international recognition of Canadian artists. Forging alliances with international galleries, curators and artists, Magenta also brings international contemporary art to Canadian audiences. Myrabelle Charlebois has worked for VOX Contemporary Image, an exhibition centre based in Montreal, and Les Rencontres d’Arles, a French photography festival. Born on the west coast, Ken Faught, 57, has traveled Canada and the world taking pictures for the Toronto Star newspaper. Born in Prince Rupert, B.C. he ventured with his cameras to Yellowknife and Whitehorse covering the north for several newspapers before heading to the big city for a job at the Toronto Star. His contribution to a spousal abuse investigative series led to changes in the court system and as a bonus won both the National Newspaper and the Governor Generals award. Faught also won another NNA in the sport category before hanging up the camera to take on the Photo Editor position at the Star. After two years on the job, Faught was promoted to Assistant Managing Editor, Photo in response to his leadership role in the marriage of photography and multimedia.
Founded in 1892, the Toronto Star is Canada’s highest circulation newspaper. It is published seven days a week in the Greater Toronto Area.

Jeanette Forsythe studied photography at Ryerson University, and later continued her studies in Animation at Sheridan College. Jeanette joined Now Magazine in March of 2007 as the Photo Coordinator and has worked for Hello Magazine, TV Guide Magazine and assisted on various projects for Transcontinental Publishing, as well as several years of experience working in the stock photography industry. Jeanette has continued to develop close working relationships with photographers, illustrators, image agencies and International Television networks. As part of her work with Now Magazine, she reviews portfolios, manages a roster of freelance photographers, and produces photo shoots.
Now Magazine is an alternative weekly newspaper, published every Thursday in Toronto. Featuring many of the city’s leading critics and writers, Now also provides the opportunity for emerging voices in the industry to get exposure.

Rita Godlevskis is a freelance photo editor, currently working with Toronto Life Magazine. Since earning her Masters of Creative Media in Melbourne, she has worked with a diverse portfolio of international projects and clients such as Australian Women’s Weekly, CLEO, Sunday Magazine, Canadian House and Home, and the Toronto International Film Festival. Her passion for photography has been broad based as she has also founded and worked with such fine art projects as the ShotBox collections of contemporary photography and PhotoEd, a new Canadian photography education magazine.

Sophie Hackett is the Assistant Curator of Photography at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Prior to this, as a writer and independent curator, she published writing in Lola, Saturday Night magazine, Xtra!, C Magazine, Canadian Art and Prefix Photo. She has curated five exhibitions independently, including The Found and the Familiar: Snapshots in Contemporary Canadian Art, co-curated with Jennifer Long (2002), Flash Forward (2005), and Wallpaper (2005). She completed an MA in Art History at the University of Chicago in June 2004.
As one of the largest art museums in North America, the AGO currently boasts a collection over 68,000, spanning from 100 AD to present-day work. With Canadian artists comprising more than half the collection, the AGO also has one of the largest collections of African art, and houses major works by European masters.

Graduate of University of Toronto Art history program, Jooli started her agency, JK productions in 2000. She began with emerging artists, offering support and help developing their talent. Wil Kucey is the owner/director of LE Gallery in Toronto and an independent curator of contemporary art. Mark Lanctôt was born in Montreal where he still lives and works. He obtained an M.A. in art history from the Université de Montréal in 2002. While completing his thesis, he worked for an art dealer, curated independent projects, did some freelance writing, and started work as Director of the Association des galeries d'art contemporain, Montréal (Contemporary art gallery association). He has been a curator at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal since October 2006, where he coordinated the MAC’s Guy Ben Ner exhibition, and curated the Yannick Pouliot show. He is also co-curating the inaugural Québec Triennial (mai 2008) as well as a large retrospective of Canadian abstract artist Claude Tousignant (scheduled for Feb. 2009).
The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal is Canada’s premiere contemporary art museum. The Musée offers a varied program ranging from its Permanent Collection to exhibitions by Québéçois, Canadian and international artists. The Musée also stages numerous mixed-media events, and a host of educational activities.

Holly Lee (born Hong Kong, China) has worked as a professional photographer from 1980 to 1995, during which she participated in numerous group shows and held several solo exhibitions. She was awarded an Asian Cultural Council fellowship in 1994 and was the recipient of the Grand Award and two Gold Awards from the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers (1995) and Best of Multimedia in the Pan Pacific Digital Artistry Competition (1996). From 1992 to 1999 she was one of the founders and editors of Dislocation Magazine, a Hong Kong-based monthly journal on contemporary photography. After moving to Toronto she helped to set up LEE Ka-sing gallery in 2000. Holly has been involved in INDEXG since 2006, overlooking the gallery’s direction and exhibition programs.

Jennifer Long is a curator, artist, arts administrator, and educator. She has worked with a wide variety of arts organizations and institutions including Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, Gallery TPW, The Kodak Lecture Series, and Ontario College of Art & Design. Over the past seven years she has curated ten exhibitions including Narrating Desire, The Found and The Familiar, Snapshots in Contemporary Canadian Art (co-curated with Sophie Hackett), and Lux Nova, A Low Tech Explosion (co-curated with Dianne Bos). In addition to her independent curation, Jennifer has an advisory role within the visual arts department at York Quay Centre. Through this affiliation, she has been able to place numerous artist with in its programming.

Natalie Matutschovsky is presently a picture research editor at The New Yorker. She is responsible for finding fine art photos to run alongside the weekly fiction section of the magazine. She previously worked as Photo Editor of Culture + Travel, Modern Painters, and The Walrus magazines. Natalie studied photography at Ryerson's School of Image Art's.
The world-renowned New Yorker magazine publishes reportage, criticism, satire, essays, commentary, fiction, and poetry, as well event listings in New York City. Founded in 1925, the New Yorker is published 27 times a year, with several bi-weekly issues.

She has worked on campaigns for Molson, IKEA, Nike, McDonald’s and Pfizer. Lori Pauli is Associate Curator of Photographs at the National Gallery of Canada and the author of ‘Utopia/Dystopia: The Photographs of Geoffrey James’, ‘Acting the Part: Photography as Theatre’, and ‘Manufactured Landscapes: The Photographs of Edward Burtynsky’. She is also the curator of several exhibitions on the work of Edward Weston, Andre Kertesz and several other artists included in the National Gallery of Canada's collection. She has contributed essays on the work of Lisette Model, Diane Arbus and August Sander to a catalogue for the Kunsthalle, Vienna, and one on the work Oscar Gustave Rejlander for the Moderna Musset in Sweden. Ms. Pauli has also published several essays and review in recognized academic periodicals, including History of Photography.

CONTACT Festival Director since 2002 and editor of the annual CONTACT magazine, Bonnie Rubenstein is primarily responsible for the festival's artistic programming. Rubenstein curates exhibitions of photography by Canadian and international artists, based on the annual festival theme, including CONTACT's primary exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and numerous public installations of photography. She has over 15 years of experience coordinating contemporary art exhibitions and public art commissions for leading international artists at museums and galleries worldwide. Alessandra Sanguinetti was born in New York, and raised in Argentina from 1970 until 2003. She has photographed for The New York Times Magazine, LIFE, Newsweek, and New York Magazine. Sanguinetti became a Magnum nominee in 2007. She is currently based in New York.

Bree Seeley has been facilitating photography for 12 years. She was picture editor at the Sunday Telegraph Magazine, Maclean's, Saturday Night and currently works with The Walrus. She has taught photojournalism, assisted in the creation of 10 photographic books and served as editorial director for Magnum Photos, London Bureau and Morisot Inc, New York.
The Walrus is a Canadian general-interest magazine framed by an international outlook. Launched in 2003, The Walrus publishes commentary, criticism, fiction, and poetry revered for its high-quality content. The magazine has won 49 National Magazine Awards.

Jonathan Shaughnessy is Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art at the NGC. Originally from Ottawa, he completed his BFA, Art History, at Concordia University and received an MA in Communications from Carleton University. In 2007 he curated the only Canadian date in Ottawa for the mid-career retrospective exhibition Ron Mueck, organized by the National Gallery of Canada, the Fondation Cartier de l'art contemporain, Paris, and the Brooklyn Museum. His catalogues include The Elements of Nature (Les élements de la nature) featuring the work of Michael Scow, Irene Whittome, Liz Magor, Martin Honert and others, Cai Guo-Qiang: Long Scroll (Cai Guo-Qiang : Déroulement), Carsten Höller : Trois expos and Art Metropole : Le top 100 with Kitty Scott, featuring essays by prominent Canadian art writer Peggy Gale and artist AA Bronson, founding member of General Idea.

Kristina Snyder is the force behind Snyder&Co., a boutique agency in New York that represents award winning artists such as photographers Derek Shapton, Håkan Ludwigson, Evan Kafka and Susanne Walström and illustrators from Sweden, Stina Wirsén and Hampus Ericstam most notable among them. Kristina started Snyder & Co. in 2001 after 13 years in the photo business, first as a freelance photo editor at magazines Time, Newsweek, People, and later as a photo editor at CBS and HBO. Kristina has also consulted as a photo editor for a Swedish travel magazine and acted as a consultant and two-time lecturer at the Photo Fair in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The son of a car repairman, Towell grew up in a large family in rural Ontario. In 1996 Towell completed a project based on ten years of reportage in El Salvador, followed the next year by a major book on the Palestinians. His fascination with landlessness also led him to the Mennonite migrant workers of Mexico, an eleven-year project completed in 2000. He recently completed The World from My Front Porch, a project on his own family in rural Ontario, where he sharecrops a 75-acre farm. Towell became a full Magnum member in 1993.

After graduating from a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, Vellam moved to New York City and began working as a freelance producer in the advertising industry. During this time, she attended The School of Visual Arts, earning a Masters of Fine Arts degree. She was given the opportunity to move into the editorial side of the industry, and joined W magazine where has been the photo editor for almost four years. In her position at W, she is responsible for sourcing and assigning emerging photographers to contribute portraits, fashion stories and still lifes to the magazine. Vellam has also overseen the photography for all W supplements, including W Jewelry magazine. She has conducted portfolio reviews at Aperture Magazine, the International Center of Photography and Parsons School of Design.
W Magazine is a monthly American magazine renown for their provocative content and sophisticated vision. Published by Condé Nast, W Magazine is considered one of the most fashionable monthlies in the industry.
RHONDA WILSON

CREATIVE DIRECTOR, RHUBARB-RHUBARB
Rhonda Wilson trained as a magazine journalist and later went on to be a director of Ten.8. In the 1980s she made two photographic campaigns concerning the representation of women around low pay and homelessness; the project traveled internationally and formed the core of a solo show at the National Museum of Photography in Bradford. Ms. Wilson has written for Katalog, Portfolio, Creative Camera, Artists Newsletter, and was the writer/editor of Seeing the Light - The Photographers Guide to Enterprise. She has lectured on the Photography BA Course at Nottingham Trent and is currently the external examiner for the BA Photography Course at London College of Communications. For Rhubarb 2007 she curated Otherlands, which then went on to the Lianzhou International Photography Festival in China.
Founded in 1993, Rhubarb-Rhubarb is an organization dedicated to the professional development of photographers through mentoring courses, international exhibitions and Rhubarb-Rhubarb - The UK's International Festival of the Image.
